Gymnázium Hlinská 29, Žilina is a Secondary State School.  It was founded in 1965 and it is one of the oldest schools in the region. There are 18 classes and about 500 students between 15 and 19 years of age. The School has in each grade one German language class. Students in this class have the possibility to take an international language exam – Deutsches Sprachdiplom. Other classes follow a general curriculum which prepares our students for university studies.  One of the biggest advantages for students are a German lecturer, a German assistant and an English lecturer for English conversation. The school building has been newly reconstructed and also a brand new chemistry laboratory was built last year.  Library is also a part of the school. It has more than 10 000 books, magazines on different subjects. We have several students with special needs and students from Korea (there is a huge Kia factory near Žilina).  Our school is also well known for our wide range of extracurricular activities – from sport to languages and science. There is a very strong and good working Student School Board in our school. Few of our students are also part of the Student Parliament of Žilina. The school is very important in social life of Žilina, it has a lot of cultural, social and sport events during the year and most of them are also open to the public. We have several projects in each department and close cooperation with University of Žilina, The city of Žilina, Region of Žilina, Slovak Olympic Committee, Slovak Kin-Ball Federation, Disabled athletes from Slovakia, Slovak Red Cross, Slovak Sinfonietta, Slovak Academy of Science, Unicef Slovakia, Caritas, Green School Slovakia – an environmental program for schools, School protecting the nature, National parks of Slovakia, League against Cancer, Rotary club Žilina, The Harmony – Centre for people with disabilities and special needs and other special organisations. Our students are also volunteering for some of these organisations. We are also cooperating with many of the primary and secondary school in our region – we organised competitions, workshops and open lessons for them.
